Students had STAAR testing Monday through Thursday, and we met on Friday, a Charger Day. We looked at several artworks by artist Eiko Ojala on ThisisColossal.com. We discussed the method used for creating the illusion-filled artworks made of cut and torn paper, then had a sketchbook assignment based on the last one we saw. Think of something small and something big, then switch their sizes in a drawing. For example: something small like a mouse and something big like a herd of elephants. Draw the mouse extra large and the elephants smaller, inside or on the mouse. JR. VASE: success!Students who had registered for Jr. VASE and were available to attend on Saturday, May 14, were invited to go. That way at least the students who could attend would be eligible for the highest level of award: Silver Medal. (If it's the highest, why don't they call it Gold? I don't know.) It paid off! Twelve of the 18 artworks that were entered received a score of IV (and therefore a red drape medal), and of those 12, 4 entries received a Silver Medal! I'm super proud of everyone and truly appreciate Region 4 West allowing us to participate since we missed the event in Region 4 East. It was a great experience!
Since we are not going to have jurors come to Pin Oak also, those students who were registered but could not attend on Saturday will not participate this year. I'm still proud of each one of you and appreciate your hard work, and I'm glad I included your work in the Spring Art Show recently. Start thinking about ideas for next year!

Saturday May 14, 2016 Wilchester Elementary School 13618 St Marys Ln Houston, TX 77079 We will have the same plan to meet at Pin Oak at 8:45 AM, with the bus leaving at 9:00 AM. We will again plan on returning in the afternoon around 4, but students who have cell phones should bring them so they can call home when we're on our way back. Those students who are available to attend should still complete the final draft of the Student Intent and Artwork Identification Form. Please be sure to get those forms completed and returned to me ASAP. I'm sorry we had to reschedule, especially to those of you whose schedules don't allow you to attend this new date. You all put in an impressive amount of time, thought, and effort to participate and I'm incredibly proud of all of you. Seventh graders, I hope you will consider participating again next year. Eighth graders, I hope you will consider participating in VASE at the high school level next year. |
